Yes, you must always check-in before boarding your train.
Your ticket is validated by checking in.
If you are a registered passenger, you can check-in in the “My journeys” area on this website or on the Trenitalia App.
If you are not registered, you can check-in using the function available in the e-mail or text message you received when you bought your ticket or on the Trenitalia App if you added and saved your Digital Regional Ticket in the “My Journeys-Saved Tickets” area.
Check-in is available starting at midnight on the day before your journey until the scheduled departure time of the train you selected upon purchase: the following message is displayed on the key: “Check-in and travel”.
Once you have checked in, the message “validated” appears with a dynamic green bar to confirm that your ticket is validated.
The Digital Regional Ticket is only valid for the train(s) for which you have completed check-in.
You can buy your Digital Regional Ticket up to 5 minutes before the scheduled train departure time.
You can buy your Digital Regional Ticket on this website, on the Trenitalia App or call-center, at authorised Travel Agencies and on the Trenitalia Tper website.
You will receive a summary e-mail with an enclosed pdf information file that is not a valid travel document. A feature is included in the e-mail or text message (if requested) to check-in an manage your ticket (change date/time).
PLEASE NOTE! If you purchased your ticket without logging in, remember to add and save your ticket using the App through the “find my ticket” feature in the “My journeys - saved tickets” area.
If you logged in before purchasing, you will find your ticket in the “My journeys” area on the Trenitalia website or App.
If you purchased your ticket without logging in, open the link in the e-mail or text message (if requested) you received.
You can change the date/time an unlimited number of times before 11:59 on the day before your journey.
You can change the time an unlimited number times before 11:59 PM on the day of your journey if you haven't checked in.
You can no longer change it once checked in. After changing, you will receive a confirmation e-mail and, if requested, a text message.
You only need to submit your changed ticket when asked on-board.
If you intend to take that train, you still have to check-in before the scheduled departure time.
If you do not intend to take that train, do not check-in: you can change the departure time until 11:59 PM.
You have to submit your Digital Regional Ticket with the dynamic green bar to prove you checked in.
You must also submit a valid ID.
The Digital Regional Ticket is in your name and personal and cannot be used by others.
The Digital Regional Ticket remains valid until the scheduled train(s) arrival time and is only valid for the train(s) for which you checked in.
If your train is late and your Digital Regional Ticket expires, you can still complete your journey to the scheduled destination.
