Agreement on Journey Continuation

Trenitalia adheres to the Agreement on Journey Continuation (AJC), which has been signed by the main European rail operators. The agreement allows passengers on an international journey that involves a number of successive train connections on services operated by AJC signatories who have missed a connecting train due to the delay or cancellation of the previous train to board the next available train – at no additional cost – operated by the rail company that provides the service stipulated on the unused ticket.

The operators that have agreed to the AJC are: BLS (Switzerland), CD (Czech Republic), CFL (Luxembourg), DB (Germany), DSB (Denmark), HŽPP (Croatia), MÁV-START (Hungary), NS (The Netherlands), ÖBB (Austria), PKP IC (Poland), Renfe (Spain), SJ (Sweden), SBB/CFF/FFS (Switzerland), SNCB/NMBS (Belgium), SNCF (France), SZ (Slovenia), Trenitalia (Italy), GYSEV (Hungary), ZSSK (Slovakia).

How does it work?

If you miss your connection on an international journey due to the delay or cancellation of the previous train from one of the rail operators who have signed the agreement, you should contact the railway staff present at the station for information and a certificate of delay, or on board the train, in order to be permitted to continue your journey on the next available train (subject to confirmation of seat availability) operated by the rail company that issued the originally purchased ticket.

For example

You are travelling from Munich to Milan, having purchased the following tickets:

  • a Eurocity ticket from Munich to Verona (operated by Deutsche Bahn);
  • a Frecciarossa ticket from Verona to Milan (operated by Trenitalia).

If you miss the connection to Milan due to a delay in the train to Verona, you should ask the Deutsche Bahn railway staff to obtain a certification of delay and contact Trenitalia personnel present at the station, so you can continue your journey on the next available Frecciarossa train service direct to Milan.

Main conditions

  • In the case of international journeys involving Trenitalia services, the Agreement on Journey Continuation is exclusively applicable to high speed (AV) train services. Intercity and Regional services are excluded. The other rail operators who have signed the agreement may also have applied other restrictions to the categories of trains to which the Agreement on Journey Continuation applies.
  • The Agreement on Journey Continuation may only be applied if you have allowed sufficient time to transfer to your connecting trains when initially booking your journey and, in any event, where Trenitalia services are involved, only if the missed connection is caused by a delay of the previous train of more than 15 minutes.
  • Continuation of your journey may only take place with the same rail company that operates the service provided for on the original ticket and only for the same route.
  • To continue your journey, you must be in possession of the original ticket and the certificate of delay or cancellation of the previous train.
  • The possibility of continuing your journey on the next available train is subject to seat availability in the same class of service that was purchased at the time of booking.
  • The Agreement on Journey Continuation has been voluntarily signed by the rail operators involved, in the form of a commercial gesture, and does not fall within the right to assistance, refunds/rerouting or compensation for delay granted to passengers as provided for in each of the individual contracts of carriage involved, in accordance with current legislation. Therefore, each of the transport services involved are governed by separate contracts of carriage, to which the conditions of carriage of the respective carriers apply.
